Ecological Design Association Ireland
About
EDANI works to inform professionals and the general public about the nature of and how to achieve environmentally friendly and ecological buildings. We work mainly in Northern Ireland but have links with a number of other organisations across the whole of Ireland. We plan to provide information on how to access advice and expertise and what materials and design techniques might be used to achieve ecological and environmentally friendly buildings and environments.
We will establish a membership structure and run workshops, conferences and training events. We also plan to work on building projects that demonstrate ecological principles and give advice to a wide range of NGOs, environmental groups and other organisations. We were planning to hold a symposium on indoor air quality and healthy buildings at the University of Ulster in May 2020 but this has been postponed until the pandemic has abated.
We did support a workshop event on building with hempcrete with the Irish Hemp Co-operative at Heritage Building in Ballymena in November 2020 and more are planned in 2021 including one in County Meath in March.
We plan to establish a network of architects, surveyors, professional building designers and builders who are committed to following sustainable and ecological principles in their work. Members of EDANI will be able to benefit from enhancing their knowledge and expertise which may assist them when practising as architects, landscape designers, interior designers. environmental consultants etc.
We also will work to support organisations concerned with energy efficiency and fuel poverty to adopt the use of ecological retrofit methods and materials.
EDANI will raise funds, receive grants and donations and apply funds to carry out the work of the charity. It will co-operate with, and support other charities with similar charitable purposes and carry out research, educational and training events and produce publications providing information and advice about ecological and environmentally friendly design of buildings and places and how this benefits the environment and the health of the public and building occupants.
We will also work to educate the public and politicians about the importance of following environmental and ecological best practice. For instance we are associated with a proposal to include One Planet Living and Community Land Trusts in Northern Ireland legislation and climate change policies.
EDANI follows the work of SEDA, the Scottish Ecological Design Association.
